Happy Graduaton Dad!

Hats off to you Dad... on your final day of proton therapy!

My mom let me know that all of the staff from MPRI signed a graduation cap and gave it to my dad following his final treatment session this morning. They are now in their car on their trek back to Chicago, after being gone for 2 months. Very eager to be back home!

We enjoyed sharing time together during our past Indiana visits... but our eager to take the train again for our trips to Chicago.
Indiana walks were very picturesque but lacked in the city skyline.

Mehandis is eager to have his own bedroom again at Grandma and Grandpa's downtown condo.
Congratulations Dad on your completion of treatments! Hoping a long road of good health lies ahead for you.

Family (and the Circus) Comes to Town!

The last two weeks we welcomed overnight guests. My mom came for a few days, during the week we had a bit of a heat wave. We had a great time together playing in the sprinkler, getting our hair done, going to a Texas BBQ and taking respite in the down stairs AC. She quite a knack for making tunnels and elaborate track designs... which I am having difficulty now replicating for Mehandis.

Last week, during much milder summer heat my dad's brother and sister, Uncle Gregg and Aunt Ardith came for a visit. They enjoyed teaching Mehandis the names of more American -made cars (being from the Michigan, BMW's just don't cut it!), eating dinners al fresco, and getting re-acquainted with their great-nephew.

Enjoying some conversation and relaxation together, the day they arrived.

Uncle Gregg took to train playing and Sesame Street watching with Mehandis.

We took a trip to the Children's Museum, where Aunt Ardith got to enjoy "playing" with a crane in the post office display.

We then walked to the lake front to see the Circus Parade festivities. There were many ornate circus cars, elephant and pony rides and a petting zoo.

Mehandis did very well giving all of the animal feed out of the ice cream cone to the goats. I was convinced he would want a bite as well!

As luck had it, our swim lesson's open house was during the week my aunt and uncle were in town. So we have new swim class pics :)
The little boy receiving Mehandis's splashes doesn't look so thrilled at how skilled of a kicker Mehandis is.

Mehandis kept looking to the balcony for Uncle Gregg.

The instructors do a good job complimenting Mehandis on his swimming. They told him that he was one of the best jumpers, underwater goers and shows much enthusiasm for the water!

This is the best part of class for Mehandis... jumping! Ready. Set.

Go!!!

Quack, Quack, Quack

My little duck is turning out to be quite a skilled swimmer these days. We have taken 2 weeks of swim lessons and Mehandis is kicking, jumping and splashing up a storm.

He learned how to safely go underwater in his last class... by closing his eyes, shutting his mouth and holding his breath. As you can see in the photo above, Mehandis thinks that he needs his tongue out whenever he shuts his mouth.

Sometimes, he empties the pool a little too quickly with his antics - both literally and figuratively!

Cousin Lauren is very patient with him. She is a waterbug herself.

Unfortunately, my water-loving friend Dara was unable to enjoy beach time with us during our last visit to the Fort. The weather never got out of the 60's so we made the best of it with a picnic at a playground and lots of fun during Mehandis's 3 hour nap! The adults enjoyed watching a movie, followed by cocktails. George is quite skilled with a swizzle stick and a story.

Cheers!

We all enjoyed the "snicky-snacks" after Mehandis woke up.

The boys shared some new dance moves with us as well!

So as the summer is moving on... the time to get to my "To Do List" is shortening. The list includes some painting, photo album filling, closet re-organization and porch repairs. But the most daunting to me is potty training!
I do think that Mehandis will be excited to finally be allowed to flush the toilet (he asks all the time) but I just hope he can make it to the toilet eventually! My mom bought Mehandis "Cars" underwear... which Mehandis knows he gets to wear when he is potty trained. For now he is happy using his "big boy pants" as a hat.

Summer Has Arrived!

"No go school"... is how Mehandis describes summer vacation, and he is right! School let out last week Thursday and we have since enjoyed a road trip, music and lots of play time.

Our first day of "no go school", we packed up the car and drove 7 hours to Bloomington, Indiana. My parents are staying there for 9 weeks while my dad has daily cyclotron visits for proton therapy. The 5 of us enjoyed touring around Bloomington by foot and car. We went to the pool, strolled around the square, enjoyed beverages at an outdoor cafe and played baseball at Indiana University's campus. It is a gorgeous campus with a water fountain that Mehandis REALLY wanted to climb into.

All that fun wore Mehandis out... as you can see him sleeping through lunch at my parents apartment.

We are slowing building up Mehandis's repertoire of songs to include not only Footloose and Bon Jovi, but other Hair Bands of the '80's. Below he is rocking out to GNR's "Paradise City".

I admit that I enjoy rocking out to these songs as well... as our neighbors can attest to. After singing "along" with Mehandis, with the windows open, one of the guys next door asked Michael if I am offering vocal lessons.

We have many pretend adventures to church, Daddy's office, shopping and going to the "Muffin Man" for donuts. Here Mehandis is simply pretending to be going home... "Come on Elmo, go to our home", as he says it. A pretty great place to be I think.

Hints of Summer!

Summer is coming! Despite our recent donning of sweaters, the threat of frost at night and days when the thermometer doesn't get past the 50's... I have already seen the signs of summer.

1. My calendar says only 3 more days of school.

2. Michael's sail boat is back in the water.

3. It is light outside from 4:45 until 8:45

4. We are tending to go barefoot pretty frequently.

5. Picnics and eating on the porch are occurring at least 3 times a week.

6. The pool is open!

7. Laundry can wait until the weekend.

8. Already needed to buy a new pack of swim diapers.

9. Sunglasses and sunscreen are becoming a necessity.
10. The calendar is getting booked up with camping trips, road trips, swim lessons, play dates and other summery goodness :)

Good News

Over the past couple of weeks I have had a hard time answering the "How are things going with the adoption" question. There were several things that had changed my typical roll-with-the-flow attitude. All abandonment cases in the Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital city, had been stopped indefinitely. The specialist, from CHSFS, we have been working with (and used with Mehandis) was suddenly changed with the reason of lack of referrals as part of the explanation. In addition referrals and predicted "wait times" were getting fewer and longer. As a result my answer to "How are things going with the adoption" was getting longer and I wanted to discuss it with fewer people.

Last week one of the specialists from CHSFS sent out information as to why referrals were continuing to be slow. The information shared is as follows:

There are over 400 families waiting with CHSFS right now.
Children's paperwork prior to referral is taking longer.
Bethel orphanage is changing from MOLSA to MOWA.
More agencies working in ET, particularly in the south.
More international child welfare assistance (meaning more families assisted to stay intact).
Last summer there were only a handful of referrals, which slowed things down.
Large number of families submitted dossiers in July-Oct last year.
As a result, likely 16 months until referral for those whose dossier's were submitted from July-Oct of last year (ours was September 2 of last year)

Well, that was the news I knew last week. This week feels different due to it being kicked off with several referrals... including sets of siblings for those waiting about 15 months. I am happy to see the wheels moving again and now feel back myself as it comes to waiting. So things are good... that is the answer to "How the adoption is going". Still is complicated, as it always is, but my response is much more simple again.

My parents, who have been spending the last several weeks in Bloomington, shared their good news as well. My father's proton treatment for his cancer is going well. Only side effect thus far noted is a dry elbow ;) They are enjoying their time together and getting to know the area's churches, concerts and wineries! I am having fun sharing my simple, healthy recipes with my parents as they are looking for some new nutritious options. So happy that my dad is feeling well and that they are making the best of their new temporary summer home.

My mom is also an avid "Forum" follower and "List" tracker... so she was the one to let me know that we are now officially #51 on the unofficial waiting list. They researched facts on '51 and these are the year's events:

The Twenty-second Amendment to the United States Constitution, limiting Presidents to two terms, is ratified.
The new United Nations headquarters officially opens in New York City.

If you're happy and you know it...

I think these tell a lot about Mehandis. The first captures his happy nature and shows off his great giggle. His well loved Thomas is seen on the floor behind him. He made sure this particular hat was part of his outfit as well.

Cue in the guitar and Obama bag. Sunday morning Mehandis started playing "Puff the Magic Dragon" on the guitar (well actually more singing it) and I swear the Rolling Stones "Satisfaction"... he kept singing "and I try, and I try". He incorporate a new dance move while playing the guitar as well, looks like a leg kick forward while leaning back.

I had to apologize to a gentleman at the grocery store, because Mehandis was pointing to him excitedly and saying "Obama flag" because of the small American flag patch on his Harley leather jacket. I just wasn't sure of his political leanings and didn't know what he would make of our pint size Obama fan.

Looks like Mehandis is taking song requests. Got any?
